At Smile for Life Dental in Elgin, we believe there may be nothing more important than your oral health. Practicing good oral hygiene habits at home, and consistent dental care in Elgin, means patients are able to live happier, healthier lives overall. It has been known for some time that oral health has an impact on your general health; periodontal disease in particular has been directly linked to heart disease, stroke, and other illnesses. Recently, studies have found similar findings related to breast cancer.

A study done by the Journal of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, showed that women who suffer from periodontal disease have a higher incidence of breast cancer. The study involved 3,273 women, and proved that the women who had lost teeth due to periodontal disease were 11 times more likely to have breast cancer as well. It’s speculated that the reason may have to do with bacteria that enters the blood stream when a tooth is lost, which suppresses the immune system and possibly leads to breast cancer. Further research will undoubtedly be done in the future to find exactly how periodontal disease relates to breast cancer.

What’s certain, is the importance of protecting your oral health before it’s too late. Keep your smile healthy with good oral hygiene and regular dental care.
